Chapter 9 - Mina had heard them talking

Mina slept poorly after the hospital.

The second night, she asked:

“Is Grandma Greta mad?”

“She isn’t your grandmother.”

“She said after wedding she is.”

I sat beside her.

“What else did she say?”

Mina hugged the stuffed rabbit on her pillow.

“She told Veronica I’m the problem with the papers.”

“What papers?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where were you?”

“Library.”

“When?”

“Last week.”

I remembered.

Veronica and Greta had asked to use the library to discuss wedding seating.

Apparently they discussed something else.

Mina had rolled in looking for me.

She heard Greta say:

“If the girl remains protected, none of this works.”

Then Veronica:

“Adriano will never sign anything that affects Mina.”

Greta:

“Then you separate the emotional question from the financial one.”

Mina did not understand.

I did.

Barely.
