Chapter 4 - Why Mina believed I abandoned her

The next morning, a hospital social worker spoke privately with Mina.
She said Veronica had been telling her things for weeks.
“Daddy is getting a new family.”
“You’ll go somewhere with children like you.”
“He won’t have time for all your equipment after the wedding.”
“Big houses need useful people.”
The social worker asked:
“What did you think useful meant?”
Mina answered:
“People who can walk everywhere.”
I left the room when I heard that.
Not because I was angry at Mina.
Because I did not want her seeing what happened to my face.

I had invited a woman into our home who had made my daughter feel her wheelchair reduced her value.
That was mine to face.
