Chapter 2 - Mina’s injuries

An ambulance took Mina to the hospital.
Her wheelchair came with us.
She had:
A small scalp laceration.
Mild bruising on one shoulder.
No skull fracture.
No concussion.
No spinal injury.
No broken bones.
The wheelchair itself was undamaged.
Mina had a congenital neuromuscular condition affecting her lower-body strength.
She could stand briefly with support.
Walk a few assisted steps on good days.
Her wheelchair was not evidence of helplessness.
It was mobility.
Freedom.
Independence.
Veronica knew that.
Which made yanking her out of it worse.
The pediatric emergency physician asked:
“Was the child intentionally removed from the chair?”
“Yes.”
“By whom?”
“My fiancée.”
Mina corrected:
“Ex-fiancée.”
The nurse looked at me.

I said:
“She’s right.”
